Glossary

Are you braising up for a successful career in the Oil and Gas industry? Then it is important for you to know some of jargons in the industry. Use our glossary to get the meanings of some key industry terms.

OIL RECOVERY:
The process of getting oil from a reservoir.

OIL SPILL:
A situation whereby oil leaks from the well or pipelines

SWEET CRUDE:
This is when crude oil contains less than one percent sulphur

SOUR CRUDE:
This is when crude oil contains more than one percent sulphur

DEHYDRATION:
The removal of water from a substance

MELTING POINT:
The definite temperature at which a solid changes into liquid.

BOILING POINT:
The definite temperature at which a liquid changes into gas

DISTILLATION:
A process of heating a liquid until it changes to gas.

TRAP:
A geological structure in which hydrocarbons build up to form an oil or gas field.

VELOCITY:
Distance of travel in unit of time.

FLARING:
Burning of hydrocarbon gases.

MINERALS:
Resources found underground.

NIGERIAN CONTENT:
The quantity of value added to, or created in, the Nigerian Economy through the deliberate use of Nigerian human and material resources and services in the exploration, development, exploitation, transportation and sale of Nigerian crude oil and gas resources, in order to develope local capabilities and encourage foreign investment, without compromising quality, health, safety and environmental standards.
